There are various different routes that can be taken by those who wish to be trained for administration and office work. Firstly, many employers for general administration positions, as seen on the cardiffjobs website, often offer training on the job, as every company will need something different from their administrators. They will rarely ask for a specific administration qualification, but when it comes to previous training, many will more than likely will require some work experience in a similar position.

However, many do choose to complete an administration course or qualification, especially those who wish to progress during their career to a position of more responsibility. These courses can be taken at any stage, whether it is straight out of school or mid-way through a career. Many courses are available that offer training for secretarial or receptionist work, which can be taken to gain a more in-depth understanding of how to run an office. Some might choose to complete these courses through open and distance learning, in which training can be completed at a steady pace through a computer-based learning package. There are many to choose from, and it is important that the right course is chosen so as not to waste your time. The best way to decide, if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to do, is to talk to a potential employer or course leader about the best option for you.

Others can choose to gain administration and office work training by enrolling in a course at a further education college. Unlike distance learning, this option gives trainees more interaction with people, but also usually have the option of being full-time or part-time. Courses usually come under a title such as office and business administration.

Another option is to enrol in an apprenticeship, which, unlike the courses previously mentioned, incorporate training with working. Through apprenticeships, trainees will gain employment as an office worker, and will be trained on the job whilst getting paid. Those being trained in this way will be working towards gaining NVQs at levels 2 and 3.
